We’ve recently introduced two new ‘Masters’ squads, an Over 35s Women’s team and Over 40’s Mens team.

Both teams are looking forward to playing friendly games & participating in England Hockey Cup Competitions starting in the 2021/22 season.

Women’s O35s

The women’s squad (pictured) recently debuted against local side Harborne on one of the hottest Saturdays of the year to date!

With a full roster of Ladies players signed up from across our Women’s section, they are a formidable bunch of skillful players, many of which are in fact +40yrs.

You can follow their progress here.

Mens O40s

Newly launched - The Mens O40s squad is still in its development phase.

We know we have many strong players in this age bracket who will be keen to take part.

Ian Spring has been appointed as Captain, if you are a member approaching 40 years of age or are already over 40 then please contact Ian – click here to message him directly.

Oppositions Needed

We are looking to setup friendlies this summer (2021) with local clubs in the Birmingham, West Midlands, Worcestershire and Warwickshire Areas.

If your club has a suitable Masters team and is interested in playing against one of our squads please get in in touch with our Fixtures Secretary Julie, email bromsgrovehcfixtures@gmail.com

What is Master hockey anyway?

Although the name is suggestive of being a ‘master’ of hockey, you don’t have to be a professional athlete to qualify.

The term ‘Masters hockey’ simply refers squads comprised of players in similar age range, starting with players aged 35 and over for Women, and players aged 40 and over for Men.

Though it's fair to say with age comes experience, and what mature players may lack in youthful potency, they are sure to make up for in skill and mental agility.

Previously you may have even heard of it referred to as Vets or Veterans hockey, but the more modern phrase was adopted by the FIH (International Hockey Federation) and is now used globally.

Typically Masters teams are formed in increments of 5+ years, O35, O40, O45, etc, right up to ‘Grand Masters’ for players aged 60 and above!

It’s become increasingly popular to see Masters teams forming in clubs, as a way to encourage older players to stay in the game. And often members play in both Masters teams and standard adults (senior) hockey teams.

Bromsgrove Hockey Club is excited to diversify its offering with the incorporation of these 2 new teams in the hope of adding more squads in the future as the opportunities arise.
