# GO FOR GOAL

1 month ago By Steven Longbottom

Bromsgrove Hockey Club launches campaign to find new individuals to sign up and try their hand at Goal Keeping.

This Autumn we’re on a mission to find new adult players, aged 13 and upward, who would be willing to step into the position of Goal Keeper for our squads. Get behind our #GoForGoal campaign by sharing our story now with your family and friends.
Ladies 3rd Team Captain Dawn Tomlinson, age 29, explains the current demand on our Ladies section:

“We have 4 fantastic Goal Keepers in the Ladies section at the moment, but with 5 teams this puts a lot of pressure on them to play every weekend throughout the season which we understand can be a challenge on maintaining a balanced personal life, especially on a Saturday.
It gets even harder when we have to petitioning someone to double up and play 2 games in a day, and if they’re unavailable then it puts a greater strain on the rest of the team to step outside their comfort zone and play 11 out-field or put someone inexperienced in goal. We’d love to get a few more women on board who would be willing to attend Goal Keeper training with our amazing coaches, and give it a go!”

The club boasts 5 Ladies teams made up of players of all different ages, from their youngest players who’ve recently turned 13, to veterans over the age of 60. At the moment though, only 4 of the 70-80 women registered for the club play in Goal, while the Men’s section faces a similar challenge too.
We appreciate that our existing out-field players may not want to try-out for the position, some feel that it takes a different set of skills and mind set to perform in Goal. We’re looking for anyone new and willing to come and try it. BHC Goal Keeper Anne Corbett, who has been playing for the club since last Christmas, shares her story:
“Before getting into hockey I’d been a big fan of Badminton, the two sports couldn’t be more different! But Badminton taught me quick reflexes and required fast movement of hands and feet around a small space. I never imagined joining hockey that those skills would come into use, until I had a go in goal. I rarely play out-field any more, and putting on my Goal Keeper’s kit gives me loads of confidence – I’m actually the most protected person on the pitch so I’m not afraid to jump in front of fast balls or run into the middle of several players. You get a lot of respect as a Goalie too, you’re the last line of defence and when I make a save the whole team congratulates me and I feel great!”

Bromsgrove Hockey Club’s core value is about ‘providing access for all to experience hockey’ and this exemplified through our squads. The new campaign invites anyone interested to #GoForGoal, even if you have little or no experience of hockey or it’s been a while since you played. What’s more we’re looking at more ways to offer Goal Keeper training this season, and the club has a number of GK kits to help make this possible if you don’t own a kit.
